Best Kept Secret

What secret you may ask? Read on to find out...........

I was the last person out of our immediate friends and family to find out the biggest secret my husband had kept for the past six months. I can't tell you how many times I have either hinted, begged, pleaded, for Doug to take me to on a trip for our anniversary. The problem always came down to it running into Christmas (since it follow it two days after) Last Wednesday evening Doug had briefly mentioned he had a surprise for the family. Not thinking anything of it, I said okay and brushed it off. Remember our anniversary was still three months away and I was geared up for my girl weekend in Pinetop to run a 10K race with my close girlfriends.

Doug arrived home in time for dinner and brought in a bouquet of my favorite yellow roses. I was a little puzzled, but not enough to ask questions about the "special occasion" We proceeded to eat dinner. Around 7pm (like he had specifically told us) the cat was let out of the bag. He handed me a letter stating that starting tomorrow at 6am we were catching a plane, the kids were arranged, and to start packing. Happy 14th Anniversary! I was in shock. For starters I didn't believe a word I was reading. Thoughts of panic ran through my brain, the kids had 4 games this weekend who in the world was going to take on such a task, not to mention get them all ready for school?

The only thing I knew was the weather temperature to pack accordingly. We arrived at the airport and I was still clueless as to where we were headed. Mark who had taken us to the airport in passing as we pulled up said have a good trip, I hope you packed warm because I hear it's cold in San Fransisco. My heart sank. Why in the world would Doug go to all this trouble for a getaway to a place we both had gone to. Honestly I was totally disappointed, upset, confused. I know that sounds totally bratty, but I was expecting something more dramatic like New York or DC! We passed through security and realized that our flight was delayed (thinking I am going to California). Arriving at the gate their was nothing on the marque showing us our destination. Just then Mark came strolling up with a huge grin on his face stating he was coming with us. Huh? I was seriously confused. Well, the joke was on me. We weren't heading to San Francisco, but New York, New York. By then I was an emotional wreck. But, who cared, I was headed to the big apple!

If anyone has been YOU know that trying to see it all in just three days is next to impossible, but we did our best. We started out Thursday night soaking up all the awesome lights of Times Square.

After dinner we decided to check out the ESPN Zone, where Doug claimed his victory in Boxing.

We called it an evening around midnight knowing we had VIP passes to the Good Morning America Show.

6am New York Time was definitely a challenge since it was 3am to us (hence our puffy eyes). But, we managed to keep on our cheery faces for the camera for our first National Television Debut.

Mika was the musical guest. I was pretty excited since he had been my most recent added music to my running mix. If you aren't sure what he sings click here. I promise he is VERY catchy. My kids even love his stuff.

Following GMA we mapped out a plan to see as much of the city as possible. Starting off with our first subway ride.

Stopping off at the following, World Trade Center, Wall Street, Tiffany's, Trump Towers and Battery Park.

Like most people have told me their wasn't much to the WTC, but I did find this piece of artwork beautiful. I believe it was part of the steel painted red.

Battery Park over looking Lady Liberty

We walked more streets than I can remember. I was enamored by all of the great signs, people and surroundings.

One of our last stops Friday was none other than the Empire State Building. We couldn't have asked for more perfect weather. Not a cloud in the sky (apparently rare in mid September).

Standing grand as ever, the Empire State Building

A view straight up.

We could have opted for the 104th floor view, I was completely fine with 86 floor up.

View of the city. Lovely.

By the time we were done, I was exhausted, but that didn't stop me from challenging Heather.
When we were waiting for Mark and his sister I challenged her to a frog jumping contest. No apparent reason, just sounded fun. Afterall how many people can say they did that in the Empire State building? The best was the man who was starring at us. Good times.

On our way back we decided to catch a show and stand in the half price ticket lines. We scored a great deal on tickets and headed over to Phantom of the Opera.

After the show we headed over to the Time Warner Mall to eat at The Landmark Steakhouse for dinner. Doug and I were dead tired, but that didn't stop us from waking up early again to start the sight seeing process all over.

photo taken Sunday of the route we ran.

In honor of what was supposed to be a race day for me, we ran 6.5 miles around central park. It was probably the highlight of the entire trip. The weather was crisp, not to hot or cold. Just right. Not to mention I was running in Central Park!

We walked a little of 5th Avenue, Little Italy, China Town and Soho. As well as headed over to see 30 Rock and The NBC store. Again, a lot to soak up in so little time.

Saturday we got tickets for the Ballroom Dance Show, Burn the Floor staring So You Think You Can Dance Stars, Pasha and Anya. (Lucy I totally thought of you) We stood in the discount ticket line earlier that morning and ended up with orchestra seats only 7 rows from the stage. So close we could see the sweat off their bodies. Yummy.

Browsed the Hershey store before hand.

Our last day (Sunday) it pretty much rained all morning. I was so thankful we had such great weather. Despite the gloomy skies we did stroll Central Park one last time.

And couldn't pass up standing in front of Trump Towers to yell, "You're Fired!"

This was by far probably one of the most remarkable trips Doug and I have taken. Not to mention the sweetest, most romantic gestures he has ever done. Thank you honey for such a fabulous trip. It made me realize how much fun we have together and how much I cherish our marriage. Happy 14th Anniversary and for the record YES you are the best husband ever. Love you! And a super big thanks to our family and friends that made it possible. We couldn't have gone with out you all!
