Just What I Needed

I thought this was a cool SP at the temple

Doug and I went to a 6pm temple session on Friday. It was wonderful. Going to the temple is normally a great thing, but Friday was different. I felt like I needed to be there and actually went on a prompting. I left a blubbery mess, but I walked away feeling grateful for eternal families and having a strong happy marriage.

The boys finally got their names on their jersey's.
So cute!

Saturday without going into a long drama saga was interesting. Jared's team lost for the 5th straight game in a row. They had homecoming, which in my opinion was a bit to over the top for 7 year olds. I left feeling pretty disappointed and angry all at once. My friend was escorted off the premises because she gave her son his inhaler on the field--parents normally aren't allowed (granted other words and such were exchanged) but seriously calling the cops?? Give me a break. I was sensing a bit of racial tension. This isn't the first incident either. No worries we weren't involved, just others we know. Doug and I are very unhappy with how things are going with his league and may not continue due to these circumstances. I left with a bad taste in my mouth for sure.

doggy good mail and audible good mail!

Later on I went to the mailbox to find these two delightful items, that seriously turned my day around. My good friend Lucy and I share a love for "So You Think You Can Dance" and she burned several songs from the show onto a cd. Taylor automatically stole it and has not stopped listening to it. It definitely is getting me excited for November when we actually get to see them perform. Yay! Andrea (the shoe obsessed) sent a sweet package for our newest doggy member. And you can bet I will be using both. Thanks Andrea. Both made my day.

Dinner at Tiago's bar

Angie and I went and treated ourselves to pedicures Saturday night, went to eat and headed over to the stake center to watch the broadcast. Unfortunately, the satellite was down and they had the radio setup. It seriously sounded like we were in the stone age with crackling noises in the background. We ended up leaving (I know bad) and hooked up with some friends afterwards to indulge in one of these. So yummy!

The new Huebner building--almost finished

Today was bitter sweet. It was the last day we would be meeting as a ward. Next Sunday evening we will be meeting to find out the boundary changes and ward splits. (I wish they would have done it today instead of conference weekend!) I know for certain we will no longer be attending the stake building because the new one is literally right down the street. I am excited to be in the new building, but nervous and sad to see who we will be loosing. I almost felt like today was a goodbye meeting (which I guess it kinda was) our lesson in Relief Society was so touching. Each member of the presidency got up and shared an experience of how they have been served by others. I was glad I was able to hear because I definitely needed it. Here is one of the quotes that was read:

"We must cherish one another, watch over one another, comfort one another, and gain instruction that we may all sit down in heaven together"
(Luch Mack Smith)

good deed: Saturday helped Doug wash his car
good deed: had some friends over for dinner.

Five For Friday

1. I was so happy that after 4 days of walking solo, Angie was able to join up with me again this morning. My boys missed Maryn as well and continued asking everyday where is Maryn? Is she sick? Is she going to school? It's definitely going to be tough not having them down the street in a few short months.

Luke with his semi-side smile

2. After reading this funny post by my friend Chanel. I have poop on the brain (or at least my house does) Luke has an interesting way of talking sometimes. He talks out of the side of his mouth. I have no idea where he got it. Doug claims that my dad does the same thing (sorry dad). Anyways, I was doing something in the kitchen the other day and Luke came in (doing his side talk) and said "MOM YOU HAVE TO COME HERE QUICK!" I told him I would be there in a minute and he replied with a NO, you have to come now and look what Jared did...... HE TOOK A POOP AND LEFT A MARK! You have to come and clean it right this minute--it's disgusting!! I could not stop laughing because he was so serious and of course exaggerated "the mark" in the toilet out of proportion hmmm I wonder where he gets this from? (I tend to say something is extremely messy when in reality it's not). Don't worry there is no documented image. Luckily a few flushes cured the issue and I cleaned it this morning just to make sure.

what do you think?

3. I went to Target the other day to pick up a wedding gift. I have been trying to avoiding Target and any stores for that matter. I tend to buy things that I don't really need and if I don't see it I can't buy it. I was reminded again after going to the checkout. Walking up and down the aisles I spotted this on the clearance rack. I am not sure if I am sold on it yet, hence the tags. But it was too cheap to pass up $16.00. Not to bad for a new dress-- the bummer part was the green shoes in my closet I thought matched are the wrong shade.

Luke, Weston and Maryn
Happy with filled tummies

4. I drove Angie out to their new house since I haven't been out there in a while. Her house is coming along faster and faster each time I go out there! It looks so great now that the brick is up. I am not sure she would ever post it for fear she was bragging, but I will be happy to brag for her. It's a beautiful home and I am anxious to see it when it's all done. The kids were screaming in the car so we caved and took them to Mickey D's to play. I can't even remember the last time I have been there. The funny thing was Luke asked, are really going there? I guess he was pretty surprised we were actually going into play. Too funny.

San Antonio Temple

5. After Doug received his official "pass" on his boards the other day I decided it would be appropriate to go to the temple. I feel after months and months of prayer I feel we have been extremely blessed with a new job and now having Doug board certified. We have been so busy lately and who are we kidding life doesn't slow down unless you allow it too. I called and made our appointment Tuesday for this evening and we are going on a date. We had a goal to go at least once a month, tonight is a start.

Halloween package from Michelle

6. Okay so I broke the rules and added a #6. I couldn't forget to add in my good mail from Michelle A. She was so sweet and crocheted me these pumpkins and a few other goodies for Halloween. She has an amazing talent. I have them up already on a bookshelf. Thanks Michelle!

good deed: dropped off a bridal shower gift

P.S. Did anyone catch this last night? I couldn't stop laughing at the "Run for Rabies...." I think I may have to watch it again.

She'd Drive If She Could

I love this photo of Taylor and Jared

I feel very fortunate to have pretty good kids. They of course have their moments at times, but what kid doesn't? Each of them have their strong and weak points. However, for the past year or so Taylor has been on a roll of good behavior. (not that she was bad before) I am not sure what triggered it, but I can honestly say that Taylor helps me beyond measure, especially when Doug isn't around. This morning was really not any different than any other day, I have just decided to document it.

-She sets her alarm for 6:10am. I never have to wake her.
-She makes her bed
-Lets the dog out of his crate and feeds him.
-She wanted pancakes, which I offered to make, but..... she took it upon herself and made pancakes start to finish AND cut up three other plates for the boys.
-She made sure the lunches were ready.
-Helps the boys get dressed and ties Jared's shoes (he can't seem to tie them tight enough)
-As I do the morning chores before getting into the car, she buckles up the little boys and often honks so I hurry and come out to the car. (I think she would drive if she could!) This is all before 7am. On top of her help she manages to juggle this as well.....

-basketball
-safety patrol
-5th grade student council
-orchestra
-4 dance classes

Are you tired yet? I am by writing it. I know people think I am a bit crazy for not really giving my kids "chores" around my house. Growing up I never really had any responsibilities, but found that I would do things on my own such as ironing, or mowing the lawn. I know each child is different (and I can already tell Jared will be). I would have to say that Taylor is a mother's dream and to think that I shed even one tear when I found out she was a girl on my ultrasound! Shame on me! Obviously He knows me better than myself. I feel so proud to have an amazing daughter and to top it off she is fabulous at multitasking! I think that is why she is capable of doing so much and continues to do so well in school. I also think this is why I have a difficult time telling her "no" when she wants to try something new. My theory is, if she can handle it, then why not? Not only are your dad and I lucky to have you, but you are a great big sister to your brothers. I just want to say I am extremely proud of you sweet Taylor and love you tons!!! Oh, and did I add that the reason Weston is potty trained is because of Taylor?

SPT--Finally Did It!

Girls Night
Ellice, Kristen, Jenny, Sara, Kristi, Natasha, Nicole, Sandy and Angie

After months and months of talking about a girls night. I actually pulled it together a week ago and we had so much fun. I had seen and talked to several people about Bunco night and wanted in on the fun for myself. Angie had the game and hadn't even pulled it out of the box, so last night we finally did it! We laughed, giggled, ate and just had "girl" talk. It definitely reminded me of how much I miss having adult conversations. Thanks ladies for a wonderful night. We have already discussed future months to consist of a beauty night, quilting night, hair night, etc. I am already excited for next month!

good deed: took the boys to the library.

Four Lettered Word

Remember this day back in July? Doug received a phone call from his friend this afternoon informing him he just got his board scores in the mail. He automatically walked out of the house. I was a bit puzzled until he said I am walking to the mailbox. I seriously got ill all of a sudden. My stomach had instant butterflies and my heart felt like it was pounding outside of my chest. As he walked back into the house, I said, "well........" (four letters can mean VERY different words Pass or Fail. I was beyond relieved when the reply was an excited:

I am SO glad this milestone is behind us, now we won't have to worry about another exam at least for 2 years! I am so proud of you honey!! Way to go!

Sisterhood Week

One of our hearted doors.
Looking a bit scummy compared to Ang.

Yes, I am still in my workout clothes at noon!

Last year the week before Women's General Conference our stake had a sisterhood week. They decided to do the same thing they did last year. They mapped out a week of things for us to do and get involved in. Of course they never expect you to attend any of it, but make what you can. Today was "heart attack" day. Angie and I cut out a ton of hearts and taped them to our bodies and quickly ran up to six houses to leave some hearts and a treat. It was actually kinda fun and a little tricky so we wouldn't be caught in the act.

Weston is always happy to get zirburts from daddy.
So cute.

Right as I walked in the door I was surprised with a call from Doug asking if I wanted to meet him at Subway for lunch. It's a rare occurrence that he is able to get away for lunch. Weston and I jumped in the car and headed up to meet him. It was short and sweet, but I'll take what I can get. I'm off to finish some last minute chores and tackle the yard. I am so excited that my girls game night is finally coming to pass. I am hosting it at my house tonight. Should be fun. Oh, and don't forget to set your DVR's for Heroes--the big season premier is tonight. Yippee for fall television!

good deed: made strawberry shortcake kabobs for my party guests.
Yummo!

94 More Days Till Christmas

I gasped as I walked around Costco Friday evening and saw a sign posted with the number of days until Christmas. Obviously that is still a while away, but it seems much closer when you put it into a "number" of days until......Of course this was accompanied by toys, ribbon, lights, etc. It takes me a while to get into Christmas especially since we haven't even hit Halloween yet! Our Costco outing had a purpose (I normally try to avoid for fear of spending too much money) we gathered last minute food items, drinks, and paper products for our Ward Back to School Bash. I wish I could say that was the entire focus of Saturday, but unfortunately it was just the icing on the cake. It went something like this........

7:00am: wake-up and even though an hour later than normal--not enough!
7:15am: get kids up for breakfast, clean up house
8:15am: take Jared over to friends to take him to his game
9:00am: took Taylor and Mackenzi over to the stake center for talent show try-outs.
9:45am: take Taylor to her basketball camp.
10:00am: arrive at Jared's game--hurray it started on time!
11:10am: leave to pick up Taylor from basketball
11:30am: luckily Doug was able to pick up Jared from his game on the way home from clinic.
12:00pm: transport Weston to bed (very sleepy and grumpy)
1:00pm: go running with Doug (extremely hot and the longest 3 miles ever!)

Clean Bones (which never lasts long enough)

1:30pm: wash the dog (they get stinky fast)
2:00pm: take Jared to a batman birthday party. He had a blast.

2:15pm: get the mail and find my pink Christmas envelope. So delightful!

Pink Christmas Goods
Thanks Kristi!

2:30pm: eat yummy left over burrito/shower
3:00pm: veg for about 45 minutes on my bed (I wish it was longer)
4:00pm: start gathering stuff for ward party.

Taylor's shoes that fit
Crazy.

4:30pm: had some shoe issues, but discovered Taylor's shoes fit me, I couldn't believe it. (she wasn't so thrilled :)
5:00pm: set up get things organized anticipating the arrival of several people.

Activity Chairmen
Will this EVER be the last party?

6:00-8pm: run around make sure everything is stocked with food, run the bike rodeo, etc.

All the kids were so excited about riding their bikes

8:15pm: clean up, FINALLY drive back home. (my kids were not happy about the departure they fought me tooth and nail.)
8:30pm: quickly bathe boys, unload party stuff and put them to bed
9:00pm: pick up Sara and Ellice for a girls night out in the FJ. (we missed Angie due to her black tie affair maybe she'll post about it)

Ellice, Sara, and Jenny

9:45pm: at Mimi's Cafe poor Ellice gets the stomach flu and our night ends a little early.:(
10:00pm: Drop off the Sara and Ellice show me their darling works of art.I think they need to market them.
11:00pm: drive home and crawl into the cozy to watch t.v. with Doug. I don't think I was ever to happy to have Saturday done with.

Five For Friday

1. You can tell Weston is definitely the baby of our family. He not only gets away with murder, but literally is ALWAYS hurt. He takes it like a champ and is pretty tough. Last week (all on the same day) he was stung by two wasps on his arm. He ran in from Angie's house screaming. I found the culprit at the top of the swing set. Darn them anyway! Luckily I had some Benadryl handy and he was fine. Later that evening we went to grab a bite to eat before heading on to the football game. He was screwing around (like most boys do) and managed to fall out of the booth on to the floor. He had an instant goose egg. It was sad. Today he seems to be very congested again. He can't seem to catch up!

2. Doug is famous for wanting to try new restaurants around town, especially if they look appealing. I on the other hand tend to stick with my favorites and call it good. However, I willingly went a few weeks ago with him to Dickey's BBQ and it was so yummy! It's no Rudy's, but you can't beat a close decent restaurant AND it even has a drive thru. It is a chain from Dallas, so there may be future ones in more cities. The downfall is that it is pretty much always crowded, so you have to wait a bit to eat.

Halloween 2007

3. We are getting closer and closer to Halloween. I was getting a bit panicky last week when I was reading about all of you going out getting Halloween costumes. Normally, I have them at my fingertips by now. If you don't know, our family is pretty hard core when it comes to Halloween. I think it stemmed when we started doing a entire family theme. It makes it more fun and exciting. Luckily, are kids have cooperated thus far. I really wanted to be Harry Potter this year, but I was booed about that. I will have to give Doug credit for our decision this year. We made an executive decision on being___________ (sorry to be a tease, but it would spoil ALL the fun--for those of you who know shhh!) You'll have to wait until October 27th when our family has been revealed. Here is a photo of what we were last year just for fun. (hey and it kinda goes with the in honor of pirates day this week) Arrg!

Spunky Luke and a very serious Weston

4. Luke and Weston are such good troopers each morning. I get them up extra early (they really would be getting up anyways) get them dressed and into the stroller. It's quite a production with the toys, snack items (normally 2nd breakfast), and a sippy cup full of liquid. I have it down to a science-phew! Anyways, I have started adding on an extra mile to my walk, not only to change scenery, but I figured I have been doing 3 miles for the past 2 years. The thing I love is the "bumpy" road we go down on our way back home. I always welcome this bright cheery yellow mailbox. It stands out and happens to be mile marker 3, which means only one more mile to go!

Isn't it cool?

5. We finally started getting the newspaper. I signed up for "Sunday" only, but apparently you get the rest of the week thrown in for free. In my opinion, it's a waste of paper, an extra tree to cut down and more trash to contend with. After picking the paper up for a few days and automatically chucking them it the trash, it dawned on me I could use them. Several months ago my grandma told me that using newspaper was a great tool to use for your windows. It not only leaves a nice clean mirror but without the streaks. Yesterday I decided to test it out and actually used the paper on my car windows. It worked like a charm. The only drawback is your hands become a little black, but that is easy to fix with soap and water.

good deed: printed and mailed something off to grandma.

Flattering, but NO thanks!

If only you could jump in and get the ring!

Doug has had an on going joke since we have been married that he still has "it." Meaning women will actually pick up on him. Back in February he lost his ring. He was really upset about it, as was I. Unfortunately, it still hasn't been replaced making it look like he is "single" again. Every once in a while he continues to joke that the nurses don't know he is married because his left hand is empty. Truth is there isn't a time he doesn't show a photo of his kids and wife. I am proud to say I married a wonderful, hot guy. I say hot because doesn't everyone think their spouse is a Brad Pitt? Well, I do. Anyways, unbenounced to me I guess I still have "it", if that is what you want to call it. I don't want to describe these next few scenarios as bragging, but more of something I think is actually quite comical.

Go Spurs!

Scenario #1: A couple of years ago Angie and I went to a Spurs game with our husbands. Doug had to break away early because he was called into the hospital which left me a third wheel with Greg and Angie. As we were leaving the game Greg left to used the restroom. Angie and I were just standing there chit chatting when I guy came up to us (I swear he was drunk) and said, "hey to you girls want to go hit such and such club tonight?" Angie was on the phone with her babysitter (and pretended to be on longer when she saw that guy) I immediately said I am married and have 4 children! I am sure I said it pretty fast because I was taken back by his comment. He jokingly argued that there is no way I had that many kids, blah, blah. He finally left after Greg walked up. I will blame it on him being drunk, but I had a ring on people! (oh, and we NEVER get these comments with our kids only the sisters and twins comments).

"The Trophy Wife"

Scenario #2: As I was sitting at football practice chatting with all the mom's a few weeks ago. We got onto the topic of physicians and how so many have had affairs. One of my friends' husband is a doctor as well and said I guess I better be getting to the gym sooner than later, because it's just a matter of time before mine may find something better or his "trophy wife." I jumped in and said of course he wouldn't do that you have kids, have been married a long time, etc. She then turned to me (jokingly of course) and said you have nothing to worry about you already are the trophy wife. Ha! What? I am not sure what the definition of a trophy wife is other than I immediately think plastic. Like Barbie, playmate plastic. Blech! I really hope I don't portray that look, I did think it was pretty funny.

No, I didn't go back!
food mart image courteous of internet

Scenario #3: Yesterday on my way to watch Jared's practice I stopped over at the Quick Stop to pick up me and my friend a Diet Coke. I walked up to the register, set my stuff down and the cashier looked at me and said, "you are probably married........Oh, no I knew where this was going! He said, I am going to be a nice guy and not charge you for one of those drinks. (I won't say what I was thinking inside) I said that was super nice of you and I am married and have 4 kids. "What?" (picture this with a sorta wanna be Spanish accent--don't ask it's a San Antonio thing) You are much too hot to have that many. He then went into how he is going through a divorce, how lame his wife was that he has to pay all the bills and take care of his children. Oh, my let's just say that 2 minutes was the longest EVER. I bolted right after I punched in my debit numbers. I forgot to add that these compliments were made by not so nice looking men--you know the salesmany look. (so no reason to be jealous there). I guess being in my 30's with 4 kids it's flattering, but no thanks! (on a side note Doug asked if I was going to go back and take a photo of this guy for the post----NOT!

good deed: took Jared to practice

Inspiring Is As Inspiring Does

Taylor & Weston
September 2005

I sat in on Doug's Sunday school lesson last week. He talked about the roles and responsibilities we have as individuals and parents. One of the questions was is the job of a father to work outside the home and the mother to stay home and teach the children? It was interesting to hear the thoughts that the youth had on this topic. We came to the conclusion yes, it is "ideal" that the mother stay home with the kids and the father provides, but each situation is different (i.e. divorced parents, single parents, etc). I came away from this lesson inspired to "magnify" my role as a mother. I feel incredibly blessed to have not only healthy children, but that my husband provides for my family and I have the opportunity to stay home to "teach" my children.
Where is time going? Luke is Weston's age in this photo.

So the question I had for myself was, am I teaching my kids? Or am I in the house with the kids and doing my own thing? Unfortunately it is more yes, than no. My husband's famous quote is "Are you raising a clean house or teaching your children principals?" Yesterday I took action. I actually took my boys out to the library. I had heard from several friends that our new library has a wonderful children section. Why haven't I ever taken the opportunity to drive here? The children's section was HUGE. It did not disappoint! They had way more books than the other branch. The bummer part was the fun story time was on the following day. E for effort?

Northwest Library
Has an amazing children's section!

I have read several food blogs lately and the photos alone are mouth watering. I don't claim myself to be any Martha. Quite frankly, much of this year we have been on the run and the last thing I want to do is cook a meal. However, inspired by these women I decided to make my kids favorite pizza crusts for dinner. I know that sounds lame, (and nothing gourmet) but for me that's HUGE. Three meals in one week--Bravo! To top it off I even made homemade chocolate chip cookies. And I am using one of the summer bloggers salad recipes for my brunch on Friday.

Fresh from the oven...nothing smells better!

Today also happens to be Jill's 'just because' Wednesday. In the past, I would send a little note or drop something off to a friend. However, it's been a few months since I have even given Wednesday any thought. Wednesday has turned into another Saturday for me. Crazy period. Today I made the post office proud! I sent off a few letters and a belated birthday gift. And.... even dropped off something to my new visiting teaching companion. Yay for inspiration. I hope by documenting this I will be inspired to do a little each day!

This WAS a bread role. Yikes it almost looks like a cross
between a donut with enchilada sauce on it. Bleh!

On a completely random note. I think I just may have proved the theory I am NOT a clean freak. I keep all of our bread on top of the microwave. Apparently this fell behind and I found it today. Who knows how long it was there. Eeww!! If this doesn't inspire you to clean, I don't know what does :)

good deed: wrote the kids notes in their lunches.

SPT Washing Hands

Me with Ladmo
(back row with braces--eek!)

I grew up watching the Wallace and Ladmo show. If anyone lived in Arizona as a child they probably would admit to be a follower of the show as well. You can bet each morning I plopped myself at 7am in front of the television to listen to "ho ho ha ha hee hee ho ho....."They would do skits in between showing commercials. I loved it because they showed all my favorites, Woody Wood Pecker, Pink Panther, and Tom&Jerry. But the show was best known for the "Ladmo bag." Everyone wanted a Ladmo bag including myself. One of the ways to get one was to be in a cub scouts pack, win one by phone through a drawing or send a photograph in of you and your pet. I am not sure what took me so long to do it, but I finally did in 6th grade. When the phone call came from the KPHO studios I was pretty stoked, I may have been the oldest kid to receive a Ladmo Bag, but I was going to be on television and get one!

The photo I sent in to get a Ladmo Bag
Me & "Boomer"

I brought up this particular show because the network that hosted had some pretty cheesy commercials back in the day. But, the tunes were oh, so catchy! One in particular that I remember vividly was one about being clean and not spreading diseases. (I wish I could find it)

"Wash you hands after going to the bathroom,
Wash your hands after changing babies too,
Cause' we don't want to spread Hepatitis,
and we don't want Hepatitis to catch you, Who? Y-O-U!"

Mom helping Luke in the public restroom
(you can guarantee this happens every time we are out and about)

"Wash your hands!" I think would rank up as one of the top phrases in my home. Now that we have a dog I use it even more. The other times you find me nagging this phrase is getting home from school, after going potty, eating a meal, etc. According to experts we should wash our hands as long as it takes to sing the ABC's two times through. There is just nothing better than the smell of clean hands--especially since we use them for EVERYTHING! Thank goodness we even have other means of washing our hands if water and soap aren't around. Purel is most always in my purse as well.

good deed: stopped to give directions to someone.

Tagged Again

1). What I was doing 10 years ago: I was a new mother to a 6 week old baby and we met up with Jon and Tara in San Francisco for their old room mate Steve's wedding reception.

2). What I was doing 5 years ago: We just moved to San Antonio for Doug to start his residency. We also went to Port Aransas beach with the Gordons, Larsen's and Linds. Good times!

3). What I was doing 1 year ago: Doug was a few months into his chief year and we were scoping out areas to live in Arizona.

4). What I did yesterday: Went to church, hung out as a family and tried to get our dog to walk on a leash....definitely more difficult than I imagined!

5) 5 snacks I enjoy: Club sticks, Sun chips, turkey on wheat thins, corn bread muffins, and pound cake.

6). 5 things I would do if I suddenly had $100 million dollars: Pay off ALL debt, actually carry cash in my wallet, set aside retirement and college funds for my kids, give our family some, and donate to charity.

7). 5 bad habits: Yelling at my children, being overly obsessed with cleaning my house, leaving the water run while I brush my teeth, getting involved in more things I can handle, and not making enough time for myself.

8). 5 things I like doing: Blogging, looking at decorated homes, scrap booking--if I make the time for it, exercising, and organizing things.

9). 5 T.V. shows that I watch: The Office, Heroes, So You Think You Can Dance, Traveler, and Lost. Are they starting yet? Jeesh! I am anxiously awaiting all!

10). 5 things I hate: Organizations not being organized, any seafood, dirty long nails on little kids, folding a white load of laundry, asking my kids to do something over and over again.

11). 5 biggest joys at the moment: Weston is asleep, Doug will be home tonight, I know what I am making for dinner, we have no extra activities tonight, and my grass is starting to grow slower which means fall is coming!
