I have discussed this topic before, but thought it was appropriate to bring it up again. Since summer time has begun my kids seem to have grumbly tummies ALL day long! How did they survive during school? Did they whine at their teachers how HUNGRY they were? Or complain that they were STARVING? Obviously, wanting to eat alot of times stems from bordom. You won't find me raving about how healthy we are in our house, because quite frankly as far as sugar goes I just can't do without it. Except for cereal. I grew up on Cheerios and bananas minus the sugar. I also remember having Rice Krispies and occasionally when I went to grandma's I ate Lucky Charms, but it was rare. Grandma's house was where the treats were. My kids on the other hand, have learned (by my bad example) that sugar cereals are the best. Or maybe I can blame Doug on this one, he grew up with these types of cereals. We would make Seinfeld proud as to how much milk and cereal we keep in our house at all times. We may not have things to cook for dinner, but you can bet we always have seveal boxes cereal. My kids would eat this stuff all day long if I allowed them too. It has become the staple of survival in our home. (and saved me on numerous occasions) It does wonders in little baggies for the car. Instant snack! It also vaccums up nicely. And can you believe they won't touch this stuff for breakfast?? Nope, we stick to oatmeal, pancakes, french toast, or toast with eggs. So all you moms out there who eat healthy (and I am by no means knocking you) Kuddos to you, because I have just taken the lazy/cheap way to feeding my kids.
good deed: packaged up some just because mail to send.

Yes, my kids definitely tend to eat more snacky food when bored. Strangely, they do eat lots of Raisin Bran and Shredded Wheat, but they love Pop-Tarts for snacks. I know Pop Tarts are total trash food, but they can go anywhere - my purse, the car, church!
that is so funny! my kids like those 100% fruit snacks from costco and honey pretzels from trader joe's - not sure exactly how nutritious those are either! however my lucas keeps pulling out m&m's to try to snack on!!!
We always had sugar cereal growing up, but Josh did not. Ryley has had a little of both.
I know I always snack when bored. Such a bad habit for me.
Wow! THere is a whole lot of sugar in that picture! We are pretty boring on the cereal front in this house. I think I've bought my kids Lucky Charms one time, and we still haven't finished the box over 3 months later.
Good luck with your snackers. Have you tried popcorn? Sliced apples with pnut butter and some sprinkles to make it fun? (I saw that one on someone else's blog, and I'm going to give it a try one of these days).
I am lovvvviiiinnnngggg your post. I have the same problem here at my house. They are constantly hungry. Sometimes I think it is just boredom. I love your stock of cereal. My kids love cereal too and would eat it all day if I let them. We had a mix of sugar cereal and non sugar cereal growing up. We keep a pretty good balance of sugar cereal here at home. :D My thing is whatever works for your family and makes life a bit less hectic go for it.
i love cereal. jake and i eat it for dinner on occasion and i ate it all the time for lunch last summer. i eat multiple bowls of it. and when we were young, we would put sugar on our plain cereals- yuck! i won't do that now, but i always buy sugary cereals. so good!
You are funny!
We only have sugar cereal when Keith grocery shops. My mom strictly forbid it, and apparently I haven't been able to let go of the fear she instilled in me! I do love the occasional Cap'n Crunch, though!
My Avery starts asking for lunch about 9:30 a.m. It drives me up a tree.
It runs in the family! I can eat cereal at any time of the day:)
Jenny~ You gave me my first comment!Thank you. I am cheering out loud! I feel like food must be flying out the windows, I can't keep it in the house. My kids will only eat cereal for a snack too, but not very often. My mom never let us have sugar cereal so I let my kids have it if they want it. My kids will probably give their kids healthy cereal then the grandkids will give their kids sugar cereal, the pattern will go on & on. Keep on snackin!
I usually only let my kids have it as a snack because if I feed it to them for breakfast they are hungry in 15 minutes, I hate it!
We stick to oatmeal and pancakes for bfast here too and cereal is a big snack. I just wish I could get Dane to keep his hands out of the milk. It drives me nuts! He's almost 4 but hates when the cereal 'floats' away. At least that's what he told me.
My kids get snacky ALL day long in the summer too! I guess I'm a mean Mom though because I put my foot down and don't let them snack between meals (except the 2 year old) and an after dinner snack on some nights.
Every time they go into the kitchen they make a DISASTER in there and refuse to clean up after themselves, so that plays into it.
Good post. And I loved how you had so many pictures representing Luke in your last post! So cute. My kids get their Lucky Charms at Nana's house and their Fruit Loops at Grandma's house. I have to have sugar in the house too though! I can just see kids becoming snack crazy in the summer. I remember doing it as a kid.
My kids are the same about cold cereal. They don't like it for breakfast but it makes a great snack.
What did we do before cereal? I can't tell you how many times I've had cereal for dinner because finding something to make for dinner is always an ordeal at my house. I don't think I've bought sugar cereals since I was in college, but we sure go through our share of treats, especially creamies.
My daughter used to come home from school whining that she was too starving to take the bus and made me pick her up. She's too shy to complain to her teacher, but I know she was hungry. Plus all this sun and running around makes you hungry.
I can totally relate.. we love cereal here too.. we eat it for breakfast... and the occassional lunch and dinner too.. we love it!
My kids are snackers too... but rarely do cereal for a snack... I should encourage that.. though.. I think we have 4 gallons of milk in our outside fridge right now.. would hate to run out!
Too funny. My kids DO live on cereal - Kashi is Jake's favorite. I can't believe you think you are taking the easy way out when you serve a homemade breakfast every day! Mine eat cereal usually, then maybe a bowl or two later....
We rarely got even cheerios when I was growing up. When ever cereal came into the house we ate it all up that day because we knew it wouldn't be back for awhile. It sounds like you start their day of great.
Cereal was the single way I survived college. I LOVE it too.. but mostly the sugary stuff. I go through phases now and then when I buy the healthy stuff, only to have it sit on my shelf for a year and then I throw it away. SO I gave up on that.
I wish my girls liked to eat cereal more. I think it would make for easier breakfasts, snacks , and occassional dinner.
The summer snacking around here has almost turned into non stop grazing. This rain isn't helping any either.
