I sat in on Doug's Sunday school lesson last week. He talked about the roles and responsibilities we have as individuals and parents. One of the questions was is the job of a father to work outside the home and the mother to stay home and teach the children? It was interesting to hear the thoughts that the youth had on this topic. We came to the conclusion yes, it is "ideal" that the mother stay home with the kids and the father provides, but each situation is different (i.e. divorced parents, single parents, etc). I came away from this lesson inspired to "magnify" my role as a mother. I feel incredibly blessed to have not only healthy children, but that my husband provides for my family and I have the opportunity to stay home to "teach" my children.
So the question I had for myself was, am I teaching my kids? Or am I in the house with the kids and doing my own thing? Unfortunately it is more yes, than no. My husband's famous quote is "Are you raising a clean house or teaching your children principals?" Yesterday I took action. I actually took my boys out to the library. I had heard from several friends that our new library has a wonderful children section. Why haven't I ever taken the opportunity to drive here? The children's section was HUGE. It did not disappoint! They had way more books than the other branch. The bummer part was the fun story time was on the following day. E for effort?
I have read several food blogs lately and the photos alone are mouth watering. I don't claim myself to be any Martha. Quite frankly, much of this year we have been on the run and the last thing I want to do is cook a meal. However, inspired by these women I decided to make my kids favorite pizza crusts for dinner. I know that sounds lame, (and nothing gourmet) but for me that's HUGE. Three meals in one week--Bravo! To top it off I even made homemade chocolate chip cookies. And I am using one of the summer bloggers salad recipes for my brunch on Friday.
Today also happens to be Jill's 'just because' Wednesday. In the past, I would send a little note or drop something off to a friend. However, it's been a few months since I have even given Wednesday any thought. Wednesday has turned into another Saturday for me. Crazy period. Today I made the post office proud! I sent off a few letters and a belated birthday gift. And.... even dropped off something to my new visiting teaching companion. Yay for inspiration. I hope by documenting this I will be inspired to do a little each day!
This WAS a bread role. Yikes it almost looks like a cross
between a donut with enchilada sauce on it. Bleh!
On a completely random note. I think I just may have proved the theory I am NOT a clean freak. I keep all of our bread on top of the microwave. Apparently this fell behind and I found it today. Who knows how long it was there. Eeww!! If this doesn't inspire you to clean, I don't know what does :)
good deed: wrote the kids notes in their lunches.

That looks pretty groowdy. Do you notice I'm not yelling and using my shift button.
I'm just gonna close my eyes and pretend that the fresh baked cookies are the last picture in this post!
Everyone needs an occasional reminder to mentally recommit to full-time motherhood.
Hmmm "Are you raising a clean house or teaching your children principals?"
Wow what a great quote.
Thanks for sharing that wonderful post :)
My kids always ask me to make your famous pizza crust, but I rarely do.
I've made a goal to make dinner more often during the week since our weekends are usually what we call out and about. I've decided that on days that I do alot of running around I throw everything into the crockpot and let it cook away all day. I've gotten several compliments from the girls and Greg on how they love to walk in the house from school and work and smell a yummy dinner. It has made my day several times. Even though we don't all sit together for dinner every night at least we are all eating the same meal, and not modge podge things.
Okay that bread is disgusting. I've found VERY old hot dog buns stuck in the back of my pantry a few times and that's about what they looked like.
Hooray for Mommyhood. Thanks for sharing.
The latest issue of the Church News had a cover story about family dinners, a little confirmation that your new momentum is good for all.
Sometimes I find bread like that front and center in the pantry at my house, not even hidden behind the microwave. But we're still standing.
I love Doug's quote. Maybe I should post that all around the house. Perhaps it would stop me from being so nutty about it. I felt the same way on Saturday. I took my boys to the library-I haven't done that in quite a while. It was fun. Hey, what is your recipe for you pizza crusts? I also might go whip up some cookies-yours look yummo!
You brought up some very good points. I struggle to find a good balance in life. I want a clean house, nice meals for my family, a feeling of some organization but I also want my children to feel loved, important, valued and the knowledge that I am always there for them. I admit it is really hard to find a good balance in life. I am working on it everyday!!
Yeah! Jennifer is done yelling at us!
I think the bread gets like that faster from the heat of the microwave, not you forgetting about it.
As always, your blog delivers and makes me think. You are a great mom. Yummy, warm gooey choc. chip cookies, you rock.
I definitely feel at times though I'm a stay at home mom, that I'm at home in the house together with them, but not necessarily engaged with them. And while my house was for sale, I think I was definitely raising a clean house and not children. It's been a good new beginning for me to kind of regroup and recommit myself. You are very inspiring today!
I keep our bread on top of our microwave too so the same thing has happened to me and it freaks me out. It's like an accidental science experiment.
I know exactly what you mean about being home with the kids but doing your own thing. Most of the time I think I have a good balance between the two, but sometimes I feel like I'm here but not really here and that's just not right. The marriage and family class we're taking at church is helping to refocus my efforts in this area as well.
hey what a picture to finish the post....it does look like an enchilada with guacamole....yiac...but it was a very fun post to read...sometimes it is true, we are truly blessed. My husband however, he works from home...or he did...he would say... you don't have enough structured time for the boys...WHAT.... this is no homeschooling....I did get agravated, but I THINK i take them out more than I should...disney, park, pool, beach, museum...maybe I need some balance to all this...thank you for the inspiration
I have felt like I was in the same sort of rut, if you will. I haven't been 'here' for Dane since he's the only one home. Thanks for the reminder!
The cookies look so good. The bread, well not at all!
Yesterday morning I made Alyssa a sandwich for her lunch. I packed it in her backpack and was ready to send her on her way when I noticed the other end of the loaf almost entirely green. Thankfully I caught it just in time so I could swap it out for a nice fresh, blemish-free bagel.
You deserve a pat-on-the-back for all your efforts as a mom.
I am reading the book "I am a Mother" by Jane Clayson Johnson, right now. It is really good. Even though I never really had a career like she did, it does make me feel better about my role as a mother and inspires me to do better.
That bread roll is sick. I found something similar in a picnic bag a while back, I was tempted to take a picture of it, but didn't.
Sounds like a great lesson Doug gave. I need to take my kids to our library every once in a while too...they love it, I just never think to do it!
That bread is pretty yucky...stuff like that happens to me all the time, usually it is a rotten potatoe in the back of hte pantry...SICK!
I know what you mean but the clean house isn't my problem. I have to be reminded frequently that Satan wants us to be selfish and when I resent the demands placed on me, or the limits that are placed on mothers with young children from doing certain things, I am grateful for the reminders that we were sent her to lose ourselves so that we can truly find ourselves. That is hard for me to do.
I really do appreciate how much you work to be your best self.
